CHARLESTON -- Another three people in West Virginia have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus between Monday and Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Resources said Tuesday.
Deaths confirmed were a 95-year-old woman from Hancock County, a 63-year-old man from Berkeley County and a 58-year-old woman from Taylor County, the department said.
The additional deaths raise the total number of dead since the pandemic began in West Virginia at 7,277 people.
"This is an incredibly difficult time for the families and friends of these West Virginians," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "We offer our deepest sympathies to all connected to these individuals."
More than 1,900 residents have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus so far in 2022 in West Virginia, according to the statistics from the state. The state started the year with 5,356 deaths since the pandemic started in March 2020.
About 4,000 people died in 2021 from the virus in West Virginia. About 1,330 died in 2020.
Active cases statewide as of Tuesday were 3,077. Cases have been fluctuating up and down and were at 3,120 in Monday's pandemic update.
The state also reported 941 new cases of the virus have been received since the Monday report.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun 9 (7), Doddridge 5 (7), Gilmer 7 (9), Jackson 31 (28), Pleasants 9 (8), Ritchie 14 (14), Roane 25 (23), Tyler 11 (10), Wetzel 34 (27), Wirt 4 (3) and Wood 145 (167).
Five counties remain gold on the County Alert System Map, mid-level in terms of spread and infections.
Twelve counties are green, lowest level, and include Jackson, Wirt, Tyler and Doddridge in this area. All other counties are yellow, second lowest.
Hospitalizations statewide were at 324 people with 47 in an intensive care unit and 12 on a ventilator.
Fourteen pediatric cases were reported with five in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
Fifty-one staff and 124 inmates are infected, the Division of Corrections said. Three cases are at North Central Regional Jail, two are at the St. Marys Correctional Center and two are at Parkersburg Community Corrections.
