Death of 13-year-old W.Va. girl attributed to COVID-19

CHARLESTON - A teenage girl has become the youngest victim of the COVID-19 coronavirus in West Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Monday.

The state in its Monday morning virus update reported the death of a 13-year-old girl from Nicholas County, one of 17 deaths confirmed since the last virus report on Friday.

Information about underlying medical conditions or vaccination status of the 13-year-old girl was unavailable from the department.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources confirms the 13-year-old from Nicholas County is the youngest COVID-19-related death in West Virginia,” Jessica N. Holstein, assistant director of communications for the Department of Health and Human Resources, said in an email. “However, additional details cannot be provided due to privacy.”

The death count was at 7,251 residents in West Virginia as of Monday morning, the department said.
