West Virginia reports no deaths for a second day

CHARLESTON -- No deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus have been reported for the second consecutive day in West Virginia, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources and its Thursday morning pandemic report.

The department, however, reported 2,133 active cases of the virus statewide, up 93 from 2,040 reported on Wednesday.

While the death count remains at 7,069 since the pandemic started more than two years ago, hospitalizations statewide increased by 12 to 263 in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The peak of hospitalizations was nearly 1,100 in January.

Of the 263 hospitalized patients, 127 are unvaccinated. Forty-one patients are in an intensive care unit, 14 unvaccinated, with eight on a ventilator, one unvaccinated.

Four pediatric patients with one in an ICU were reported.

Two counties, Lewis and McDowell, are now gold, mid level in terms of infection rates, on the County Alert System Map.

Twenty counties are green, lowest level in the alert system, and the remainder of the counties are yellow, second lowest.

Wetzel, Tyler, Jackson, Roane, Calhoun and Doddridge counties are green in this region. Wood, Pleasants, Wirt, Ritchie and Gilmer are yellow.

The ranking is based on the lower of two criteria, percent positivity and infection rate. The percent positivity in Ritchie County is in the red zone, the highest level in terms of infection spread. The infection rate is at the orange level, second highest, in Wirt County.

Current active cases in local counties on Thursday (previous report) were: Calhoun 2 (2), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 8 (10), Jackson 15 (12), Pleasants 10 (10), Ritchie 8 (4), Roane 10 (12), Tyler 5 (5), Wetzel 19 (17), Wirt 8 (6), Wood 76 (76).

Twenty-six staff and 70 inmates are infected, the Division of Corrections said. Sixeen inmates are at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County and two are at Parkersburg Community Corrections.
