CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia rose to 3,154 but no deaths were reported in Wednesday's update from the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
The number of deaths attributed to the virus since the start of the pandemic more than two years ago remains at 7,129. Active cases were 3,071 on Tuesday.
In the Mid-Ohio Valley, active case totals Wednesday (Tuesday) were: Calhoun, 8 (8); Doddridge, 7 (9); Gilmer, 6 (7); Jackson, 28 (40); Pleasants, 12 (8); Ritchie, 12 (10); Roane, 26 (27); Tyler, 11 (7); Wetzel, 20 (22); Wirt, 4 (6); and Wood, 189 (179).
Gilmer, Jackson, Pleasants and Wirt counties were green on the County Alert System map by virtue of the percentage of tests coming back positive in the previous seven days being between 3 and 4 percent. The rate of new cases per 100,000 people in each county was in the yellow range, but the color is determined by the lower of the two metrics.
Green represents the lowest level of spread on the five-tier scale, with yellow the second lowest. Other Mid-Ohio Valley counties fell in that category, as did a total of 42 of West Virginia's 55 counties. Eight counties were green, and four were gold, the middle of the scale.
Hospitalizations of people with COVID-19 rose slightly, from 329 to 332, with a majority, 187, unvaccinated, meaning they did not have at least the minimum initial doses of two for the Pfizer or Moderna shot or one for Johnson and Johnson. The statistics do not take into account whether those considered vaccinated have received any recommended booster doses.
The number of patients in intensive care units stayed level at 44, but it was evenly split between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. On Tuesday, there were more unvaccinated than vaccinated ICU patients.
Twelve patients were on ventilators, again split between unvaccinated and vaccinated. The total Tuesday was 12.
Six pediatric COVID patients were reported hospitalized, three in ICU.
