Active COVID cases climb above 2,100 in West Virginia

CHARLESTON — Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus were above 2,100 Thursday, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

Active cases of the virus were at 2,105 on Thursday, up from 2,014 on Wednesday. Statewide confirmed cases have been floating around 1,800 to 2,200 for the past few weeks.

Active cases were below 1,000 in March.

Twenty-five of the 55 counties in West Virginia are green, the lowest level on the County Alert System Map.

In this region, Wood, Pleasants, Wirt, Roane and Calhoun counties are yellow. All other counties are green.

Current active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 7 (9), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 4 (3), Jackson 22 (17), Pleasants 13 (8), Ritchie 9 (8), Roane 22 (29), Tyler 4 (6), Wetzel 15 (17), Wirt 3 (3), Wood 97 (93).

Another five people have died since the Wednesday report, raising the total number of deaths to 7,064 since the pandemic started.

The state has confirmed the deaths of a 71-year-old man from Pleasants County, a 94-year-old woman from Wood County, an 82-year-old woman from Cabell County, an 88-year-old woman from Pleasants County and a 96-year-old woman from Ohio County.

“We offer our deepest sympathies as the families and our state grieve more losses due to COVID-19,” department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “Each life lost is one too many, and we must do everything we can to stop the pandemic including getting vaccinated and boosted.”

Twenty-five staff and 53 inmates have the virus, the Division of Corrections said. Nine cases were identified at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.

Hospitalizations have been slowly rising. The state reported 220 people are in a hospital with COVID-19 complications, 111 unvaccinated. Twenty-six patients are in an intensive care unit, seven unvaccinated, and four are on ventilators, all unvaccinated.

Four pediatric cases with one in an ICU were reported.
