CHARLESTON — COVID-19 numbers continued their upward trend locally and around the state over the weekend, according to the most recent statistics from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
There were 1,701 new cases reported since Friday’s update. With other cases moving off of active status, there was an overall increase from 2,321to 2,547.
Active cases in local counties Monday (Friday) were: Calhoun, 9 (11); Doddridge, 8 (4); Gilmer, 10 (4); Jackson, 13 (12); Pleasants, 5 (4); Ritchie, 12 (10); Roane, 24 (30); Tyler, 14 (9); Wetzel, 41 (32); Wirt, 3 (2); Wood, 62 (56).
Three deaths were attributed to the virus: a 94-year-old man from Fayette County, a 70-year-old woman from Raleigh County and a 94-year-old woman from Mercer County. That brings the statewide total to 6,977 since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.
“As a state, we share in the sorrow of all who have lost a loved one to COVID-19 and promise to continue striving toward ending this pandemic,” DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
Thirty of the state’s 55 counties were yellow on the County Alert System map. That’s the second-lowest on the five-tiered scale that measures spread of COVID based on the lower metric of new cases per 100,000 people in a given period or percentage of positive tests. Twenty-five counties were green, the lowest level.
Hospitalizations statewide neared 200 and were at 192 on Monday. Hospitalizations increased by 16 since the Friday report.
Cases were last in the 200s around the third week of March and hit a low of around 80 at the end of April.
Of the 192 in the hospital, 97 are unvaccinated. Thirty-one patients are in an intensive care unit, 14 unvaccinated, and 11 are on a ventilator, 3 unvaccinated.
Six pediatric patients were reported with two in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
