CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases remained flat from Thursday to Friday in West Virginia, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state reported 2,198 active cases on Friday, up two in the 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday morning. The department also said 518 new cases of the virus were received after the Thursday report.
Active cases haven't been in the 2,000s since the early days of the pandemic, however, active cases were less than 300 around the first of April.
Current active cases in local counties on Friday were (previous day): Calhoun 6 (6), Doddridge 7 (7), Gilmer 17 (17), Jackson 11 (13), Pleasants 5 (6), Ritchie 11 (10), Roane 25 (25), Tyler 11 (13), Wetzel 26 (29), Wirt 1 (1) and Wood 66 (56).
Four counties in the region are among the 17 counties the state in the yellow alert zone of the County Alert System Map, second lowest to green in severity base on infection rates. The four are Wetzel, Tyler, Ritchie and Doddridge.
All other counties in the region and the state are green.
Hospitalizations again increased from Thursday to Friday, from 201 to 208. Of those, 108 are unvaccinated.
Thirty-five people are in an intensive care unit, 21 unvaccinated, with seven, one unvaccinated, on a ventilator.
Ten pediatric cases were reported with four in an ICU.
One death was reported, a 67-year-old woman from McDowell County. The death count since the pandemic started was 6,999 on Friday.
"We are deeply saddened to report the death of another West Virginian due to COVID-19," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "As we extend our sympathies to this family, we must do everything we can to stop the pandemic including getting vaccinated and boosted."
Until June 20, the National Center for Health Statistics will be unable to certify deaths due to a system update, which may impact West Virginia's ability to report COVID-19 deaths. The state will continue to certify and report deaths using the death reconciliation process, however, a decrease in deaths reported during this time period may occur, the state said.
The state reported 218 staff and 286 residents of long-term facilities have COVID-19. Eleven residents were reported at the Glenville Center in Gilmer County, six at the Willows in Parkersburg, three each at the Mountain View Care Center in Jackson County and the Parkersburg Center in Wood County and one at Worthington Center in Wood County.
Long-term facility statistics are updated on Fridays.
Thirty-one staff and 176 inmates, 115 of those at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County, are active with the virus, the Division of Corrections said.
