CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus again dipped under 2,000, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources on Tuesday.
The state reported 1,993 active cases statewide, down from 2,060 reported on Monday. The department also reported 564 new cases of the virus were received since Monday.
Twenty-eight counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. All other counties are green.
Yellow is second lowest to green. Five counties in the region are yellow, Tyler, Ritchie, Doddridge, Roane and Calhoun counties.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 8 (8), Doddridge 6 (8), Gilmer 5 (5), Jackson 18 (18), Pleasants 5 (5), Ritchie 8 (6), Roane 30 (30), Tyler 6 (8), Wetzel 22 (22), Wirt 3 (1), Wood 86 (84).
One death has been reported in the 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday mornings, a 65-year-old woman from Kanawha County.
According to Gov. Jim Justice, the one death while tragic, there has been improvement with a declining number of deaths.
"Again, I want this to be zero," he said during his Tuesday morning pandemic briefing.
The death count since the pandemic started more than two years ago was at 7,057 on Tuesday.
"We are saddened to report the loss of another West Virginian and extend our sympathies to the family," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Please utilize the vaccine calculator to ensure you are up to date on your COVID vaccine."
Statewide hospitalizations were at 217 on Tuesday, 92 of those unvaccinated. Twenty-eight patients were in an intensive care unit, 12 unvaccinated, and five were on a ventilator, all vaccinated.
Two pediatric hospitalizations were reported.
Twenty staff and 64 inmates have COVID, the Division of Corrections said. Seven inmate cases were at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
