CHARLESTON -- One confirmed death since the last update on Friday from the COVID-19 coronavirus was reported Monday by the West Virginia Department Health and Human Resources.
The death of a 75-year-old woman from Fayette County raises the statewide death toll to 6,857 residents as of Monday since the pandemic started more than two years ago.
"This loss of life weighs heavily not only on families and friends, but also on the healthcare workers responding to COVID-related illnesses," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "We extend our sympathies to this family and encourage you to receive your vaccine and booster."
The department also reported 854 active COVID-19 cases statewide, a small drop from Friday when 882 active cases were reported. The state also said 539 new cases of the virus have been received since the last report on Friday.
Active cases of the virus have rose around 600 since around the first of April, which state health officers said was not unexpected. BA2, the second mutation of the omicron variant, is more contagious than omicron, which was more than contagious than the earlier delta variant.
Fifteen active cases were reported in Wood County. Seventeen cases were reported in Wood County on Friday.
Current active cases in other local counties on Monday (previous report) were: Calhoun 10 (21), Doddridge 1 (1), Gilmer 1 (3), Jackson 4 (2), Pleasants 3 (1), Ritchie 1 (2), Roane 3 (3), Tyler 1 (0), Wetzel 5 (8), and Wirt 1 (6).
The County Alert System Map based on infection rates also improved over the weekend. Wirt County, which was yellow, second lowest, is green, the lowest level of infection. Calhoun County remains yellow with Logan and Greenbrier counties. All other counties in the state are green.
Hospitalizations rose three over the weekend to 100 people, 50 unvaccinated. Twenty-one people are in an intensive care unit, 10 unvaccinated, and 12 are on a ventilator, seven unvaccinated.
One pediatric hospitalization was reported.
Six staff and seven inmate cases of the coronavirus Monday were reported by the Division of Corrections. One case was at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
