CHARLESTON -- Statewide active COVID-19 cases were at 2,501 Monday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department also reported it has received 2,131 new cases of the virus since the Friday update. Taking into account recovered cases, the increase in active cases since the Friday report was 205.
Current active cases in local counties as of Monday (previous report) were: Calhoun 6 (6), Doddridge 4 (3), Gilmer 2 (2), Jackson 7 (13), Pleasants 4 (3), Ritchie 12 (9), Roane 16 (8), Tyler 8 (7), Wetzel 21 (13), Wirt 8 (5), and Wood 46 (41).
Twenty-nine counties are yellow, second lowest, on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants and Ritchie in this region are yellow.
The level is based on the lower of either infection rate or percent positivity. In Wetzel County, percent positivity is at the red level, the highest level based on spread.
Another three people have died from the virus, raising the number of dead to 6,918 people since the pandemic started more than two years ago.
The dead included an 83-year-old woman from Wood County, an 86-year-old man from Lewis County and an 85-year-old woman from Braxton County. The death count in Wood County was 348 on Monday.
"As we mourn the West Virginia lives lost to this devastating virus, we must not lose sight of our power to prevent additional deaths and severe illness through vaccination and boosters," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
Hospitalizations were at 152 on Monday, 68 unvaccinated, with 23 patients in an intensive care unit, 10 unvaccinated, and 13 on ventilators, seven unvaccinated.
Four pediatric patients were reported with two in an ICU.
The Division of Corrections reported 31 staff and 8 inmate infections. Three inmate cases were reported at Parkersburg Community Corrections.
