MARIETTA – During the primary election on Tuesday, Marietta voters approved two renewal levies for the Marietta City School District.

"The permanent improvement levy is for us to purchase anything that has a lifespan of at least five years," said Superintendent Will Hampton, during a Marietta Board of Education meeting on April 25.

"Buses, books, computers, those are all very important pieces to us, they allow us to do business through the day," he said.

Hampton said if the levy was not renewed the funds will shift from the levy to the general fund of the district, which in turn will put more pressure on the district. He said the permanent improvement levy generates $1.25 million per year for the district.

The current expense levy helps the district with day-to-day operations. Hampton said it accounts for approximately 75 percent of the district's salaries and benefits. He said both levies are very significant for Marietta schools.

The permanent improvement levy renewal passed with 1,970 (57.72 percent) of people voting for the levy, and 1,443 (42.28 percent) of people voting against the levy.

The current expense levy passed with 1,904 (55.93 percent) of people voting for the levy, and 1,500 (44.07 percent) of people voting against the levy.
