CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases again increased by more than 200 statewide between Thursday and Friday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.
The state reported 2,296 active cases Friday, up 217 from 2,079 on Thursday, the state said. The state Friday also reported 713 new cases of the virus were received since the last update on Thursday.
Forty-one active cases were reported in Wood County, an increase of 16 cases from Thursday.
Current active cases in other counties in the region were (previous day): Calhoun 6 (4), Doddridge 3 (2), Gilmer 2 (1), Jackson 13 (17), Pleasants 3 (4), Ritchie 9 (8), Roane 8 (7), Tyler 7 (7), Wetzel 13 (10), Wirt 5 (3).
Twenty-six counties are yellow, second lowest level, on the County Alert System Map.
Three counties are yellow in the region, Wetzel, Tyler and Ritchie. Pleasants returned to green, lowest level.
All other counties are green in West Virginia.
The department reported 129 staff and 186 residents in long-term care facilities are infected. The numbers are updated on Fridays.
The Division of Corrections reported 24 staff and 10 inmate cases. Three inmate cases are at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County and two are at Parkersburg Community Relations.
Hospitalizations were 152 on Friday, 69 of those unvaccinated. Intensive care unit admissions were at 19, six unvaccinated, with 11 patients on a ventilator, five unvaccinated.
Two pediatric cases were reported.
Three more deaths were reported between Thursday and Friday, raising the death toll since the pandemic began to 6,915.
The department confirmed the deaths of a 90-year-old woman from Berkeley County, a 79-year-old woman from Berkeley County and a 74-year-old woman from Raleigh County.
Condolences were expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
"Together, we can end transmission of this deadly virus by choosing to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19," Crouch said. "Please utilize the vaccine calculator to ensure you are up to date on your COVID vaccine."
