CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the COVID-19 increased by one between Tuesday and Wednesday while two deaths were confirmed in the same period, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Wednesday.
The department reported 813 active cases on Wednesday and 224 new cases received since the last update on Tuesday.
Eight cases were reported in Wood County, about half the cases from last week.
Current active cases in local counties on Wednesday (previous day) are: Calhoun 3 (9), Doddridge 2 (1), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 5 (5), Pleasants 2 (2), Ritchie 3 (2), Roane 8 (3), Wetzel 5 (5), Wirt 0 (1).
Deaths attributed to COVID-19 were at 6,872 on Wednesday.
The state confirmed two deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday, a 63-year-old woman from Cabell County and a 76-year-old woman from Preston County.
"Today is another hard day as West Virginians cope with the loss of loved ones, and we extend our deepest condolences to these families," Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Being fully vaccinated and boosted is the most effective way to prevent severe illness, hospitalization or death from COVID-19."
Calhoun was upgraded from yellow to green, the lowest level on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. Logan is the only yellow county in the state and all others are green.
Nine staff and eight inmate cases were reported by the Division of Corrections.
Hospitalizations were at 109 on Wednesday, up nine from Tuesday. Fifty-three of the patients are unvaccinated.
Twenty-five patients are in an intensive care unit, 13 unvaccinated, and 12 are on a ventilator, 7 unvaccinated,
Two pediatric hospitalizations were reported.
About 85 percent of the 5,777 virus-related deaths that occurred after vaccines became available in December 2020 were unvaccinated residents, the Department of Health and Human Resources said on Wednesday.
