PARKERSBURG -- A Waverly man was sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison this week after pleading guilty to charges from a 2021 accident that killed his 5-year-old son.

Roy Thomas Tranter, 46, in custody at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County, pleaded guilty in February to one count each of child neglect resulting in death and driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, causing death.

Wood County Circuit Court Judge Robert Waters sentenced Tranter on Tuesday to three to 15 years in prison on each count, to be served consecutively. He was given credit for 344 days already served.

Tranter was arrested May 11, 2021, after his 1994 Jeep went off the side of Southern Highway (West Virginia 21) in the 3700 block and rolled onto its side, according to court documents. The child, who was unrestrained in the back seat, was ejected in the crash.

First responders found the boy unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A charge of third-offense driving on a license revoked for driving under the influence was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Court documents did not specify the controlled substance that impacted Tranter's driving.
