CHARLESTON -- A Wetzel County resident was one of two deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus confirmed Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department reported two more deaths from the virus on Monday, an 85-year-old woman from Wetzel County and an 87-year-old man from Greenbrier County.
The deaths raise the death toll since the pandemic began in 2020 was at 6,796 residents, the state said.
Department Secretary Bill Crouch encouraged vaccinations against the virus.
"The COVID-19 vaccine is life-saving and available to all West Virginians ages five and older," Crouch said. "Please make the decision to protect yourself and your family today."
Active cases again increased since Friday's pandemic update from the department.
The state reported 479 active cases on Monday, up 42 from 437 reported on Friday. The state also reported 303 new cases were received since the last update on Friday.
Fifteen active cases were reported on Monday in Wood County.
Current active cases in other counties are (previous report): Calhoun 2 (4), Doddridge 0 (3), Gilmer 1 (1), Jackson 2 (5), Pleasants 0 (0), Ritchie 1 (4), Roane (3), Tyler 1 (0), Wetzel 3 (2) and Wirt 1 (7).
All counties are green, the lowest level, in the County Alert System Map. Wirt County last week was the only non-green, having been at mid-level gold.
Eighty-seven patients with COVID complications are in a hospital in West Virginia. Thirty-eight are unvaccinated.
Twenty-six patients are in an intensive care unit, 11 unvaccinated, and 10 people are on a ventilator, six unvaccinated.
Two pediatric patients were reported.
