CHARLESTON -- Eight more residents have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus between Wednesday and Thursday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.
Two of the eight were found during the data reconciliation with death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health and included a 32-year-old man from Harrison County, the state said in its Thursday morning pandemic update. Deaths also were reported in Webster, Monongalia, Clay, Mercer, Wyoming, Berkeley and Nicholas counties.
The death count on Thursday was at 6,831 residents since the pandemic started more than two years ago. State health officials have warned that while active cases are on the decline, hospitalizations and deaths will continue for several more weeks after.
Active cases statewide as of Thursday were at 357, basically unchanged from Wednesday when there were 354 cases.
Active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 0 (2), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 4 (2), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 0 (2), Roane 4 (7), Tyler 0 (0), Wetzel 3 (7), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 14 (12).
All counties are green on the County Alert System Map.
Hospitalizations in West Virginia include 158 people, 92 unvaccinated, with 46 in an intensive care unit, 28 unvaccinated, and 18 on ventilators, nine unvaccinated.
Three pediatric patients, one in an ICU, were reported.
