CHARLESTON -- Fourteen additional deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus were confirmed Thursday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Eleven of the deaths were from the ongoing data reconciliation by the state Bureau of Public Health.
The state confirmed the deaths of a 68-year-old man from Preston County, a 55-year-old woman from Kanawha County and an 89-year-old man from Harrison County.
The reconciliation deaths were in Wayne, Randolph, Berkeley, Lincoln, Raleigh, Kanawha, Cabell, Putnam and Mercer counties and occurred February through April, with one death occurring in September 2020. The youngest was a 51-year-old man from Berkeley County, the department said.
The death count was at 6,791 people since the pandemic began. Of the 5,695 residents who died after vaccines became available in December 2020, 822 were fully vaccinated.
"Vaccination helps prevent the most tragic outcomes from COVID-19, hospitalization and death," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "I urge every West Virginian to choose to be vaccinated and boosted today."
Active cases rose by 41 from Wednesday to Thursday, from 326 to 367, the department said. The state also reported 130 new cases were received from Wednesday to Thursday,
Active cases per county Thursday (Wednesday): Calhoun, 2 (2); Doddridge, 4 (5); Jackson, 5 (3); Pleasants, 0 (0); Ritchie 4 (5); Roane, 5 (7); Wetzel, 1 (1); Wirt, 7 (6); and Wood, 14 (15).
Ninety-two people with COVID-19 complications, 47 unvaccinated, are in a hospital. Twenty-seven patients are in an intensive care unit, 12 unvaccinated; and 10 on ventilators, five unvaccinated.
Three pediatric patients were reported.
One staff and 10 inmate infections were reported by the Division of Corrections. Eight of the inmate cases are at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
Wirt County has returned to mid-level gold on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. The county, which was yellow for one day on Wednesday, is the only county in the state that is not green, the lowest level on the alert map.
