Fling updates Wood BOE on facilities improvements

PARKERSBURG -- A number of facility improvements are underway or will soon be started at several Wood County schools as summer break approaches.

At Tuesday's regular meeting of the Wood County Schools Board of Education, Michael Fling, assistant superintendent of support services, gave a report on current and upcoming facilities projects which are being funded by federal sources, local funding or a mixture of both depending on the project.

The projects include a six-classroom addition with new bathrooms at Blennerhassett Elementary School, along with a new secure entrance; inclusive playgrounds at Blennerhassett, Gihon and Jefferson Elementaries; HVAC and window replacement work at Jefferson Elementary; Williamstown High School bleachers; and other projects.

The board also received presentations on science book adoptions for elementary, middle and high school levels at Tuesday's meeting. The proposed books will be on display at the district office on 13th Street until May 9 when the board will consider and vote on formal adoption of the books.

The board voted to approve several administrative contacts, including Whitni Kines as treasurer for FY2023, Michael Fling as Assistant Superintendent of Support Services and John Merritt as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Personnel.

The board recognized students for completing I-Ready programs, the winners of the West Virginia Young Writers Contest, and winners of the Skills USA competition.

The I-Ready completions included: Rigoberto Amezquita-Miller, Haiden Armel, Greyson Board, Makenzie Brick, Gavin Byars, Jackson Carroll, Garrett Cline, Asher Davis, Savannah Dennis, Owen Dolly, Keira Earley, Natalie Fury, Emily Giffin, Trinity Hardman, Emily Harlow, Shyanne Hays, Kaidyn Johnson, Riley Kerns, Zeke Knadler, Chloe Lesher, Clayton McCroskey, Jaylynn Middleton, Jesse Morris, Gavin Moyers, Nathan Murphy, Emilee Owens, Alexy Petty, Alena Phares, Audrey Raffa, Marcus Retherford, Rylie Robison, Alyssa Sandy, Anniston Shelton, Hunter Smith, Brayden Somervill, Hannah Squires, Evelyn Stout, Madelyn Stout, Andrew Stull, Miley Stump, Bailee Taylor, Ethan Tomlinson, Wyatt Tomlinson, Lilly Traugh, Aidan Treat, Ansley Ubbens, Harmony Watkins, Gideon Watson, Joseph Yencha and Gavin Zhena.

Anna Jenkins, from Jackson Middle School, was recognized for her first place finish in the WV Young Writers Contest.

The Skills USA winners included: Gold medal: Isaac Joy, Firefighting; Silver medal: Isaac Weekly, Architectural Drafting; Jacob Stephens, Collision Repair Technology; and Mark Tucker, Industrial Motor Control. Barbara Board, Pro Start Instructor and the Wood Count Technical Center, was recognized for her work as an advisor for Skills USA WV.

Yuan Uy was recognized with the West Virginia Seal of Biliteracy Award.
