BELPRE -- Belpre City Council approved two infrastructure measures at its Monday evening meeting.
Council took emergency action to approve all three readings of a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement with American Boring Inc. for completion of a force main sewer project.
Officials said the measure needed to be passed Monday so the work could be done before scheduled paving on Washington Boulevard in August. If delayed, the sewer project would have required a section of the newly completed asphalt to be disturbed for the work.
Council also took emergency action to approve all three readings of an ordinance for a resurfacing project. The emergency action was needed to prevent the loss of grant funding for the project, officials said. The project will involve repaving work on Braun Road between Ohio 7 and Poplar Street; Poplar Street between Braun Road and Belrock Avenue; Belrock Avenue between Poplar Street and Putnam Howe Drive; and Florence Street between Gibbens Lane and the railroad bridge just south of Washington Boulevard.
Council approved the first reading of a resolution authorizing the safety service director to execute an agreement for management of the Belpre Senior Center. Two further readings will be held at future council meetings.
In his mayor's report, Mayor Mike Lorentz said Arbor Day activities in Belpre will be held April 29. Students from Belpre High School are going to clear up winter debris and mulch trees from 9-10:30 a.m. and Belpre Girl Scouts will plant an oak tree they purchased in Howes Grove Park. After refreshments the teams will go down to Civitan Park and plant three Holdren apple trees which were grafted two years ago from original parent stock.
A Police and Fire Committee meeting will be 7 p.m. May 9 prior to the next council meeting.
