CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus have more than doubled in the last three weeks in West Virginia, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources on Monday.
Active cases of the virus were 631 on Monday, the department said. Following a downward trend, cases have generally been on the rise since April 4 when active cases were at 263.
While greater than 630, active cases remain far below the January peak of more than 21,700 in the most recent delta variant surge. The department also reported 432 new cases of the virus have been received since the last report on Friday.
Two of the three counties that are now yellow on the County Alert System are Wirt and Calhoun. The third is Morgan.
Yellow is second lowest on the map based on infection rates.
All counties were green for several weeks, the lowest alert level on the map.
Active cases in Wood County were reported at 11 on Monday, three fewer than the last update on Friday.
Current active cases in other local counties are (previous report): Calhoun 14 (11), Doddridge 2 (0), Gilmer 2 (1), Jackson 1 (3), Pleasants 0 (0), Ritchie 3 (2), Roane 1 (0), Tyler 1 (1), Wetzel 6 (3), and Wirt 4 (0).
The Division of Corrections reported one staff and 12 inmate cases. Nine cases were reported at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
Twenty-one staff and 44 resident cases were reported in long-term care facilities.
One death was confirmed on Monday, a 61-year-old man from Kanawha County. The death count is 6,824 residents since the pandemic started more than two years ago.
"Every life lost to this pandemic is a tragedy," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of this West Virginian."
Eighty-seven residents with COVID-19 complications are in state hospital, 43 unvaccinated. Twenty-three are in am intensive care unit, 11 unvaccinated, and 12 are on a ventilator, five unvaccinated.
Three pediatric patients were reported in the hospital with one in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
Of the 5,729 residents who have died since vaccines became available, 835 were fully vaccinated.
