CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases are now nearing 900, continuing a trend of slowly increasing since the first of April, according to the Friday pandemic report by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state reported 882 active cases of the virus, up from 799 on Thursday. The department also reported 232 new cases of the virus have been received in the 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday mornings.
Seventeen active cases were reported in Wood County where 12 cases were reported on Thursday.
Active cases in other local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun 21 (13), Doddridge 1 (2), Gilmer 3 (2), Jackson 2 (2), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 2 (2), Roane 3 (3), Tyler 0 (0), Wetzel 8 (8) and Wirt 6 (5).
One death was confirmed since Thursday's report, a 76-year-old woman from Raleigh County. The death toll on Friday was at 6,856 residents since the pandemic began more than two years ago.
"We mourn the loss of this West Virginian and extend our deepest sympathies to the family," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
Crouch encouraged residents to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine and booster shot "to protect yourself and those around you."
Calhoun County was listed as gold on the County Alert System Map, a downgrade from the previous day's classification of yellow, second lowest on the map. Gold is mid level.
Four counties are yellow, Wirt, Pocahontas, Lincoln and Monroe. All other counties are green, the lowest level based on infection rates.
Four staff and six inmate cases were reported by the Division of Corrections. One inmate case was reported at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
In long-term care facilities, 45 staff and 111 residents have the virus, the state said.
Ninety-seven residents were in a hospital with COVID-19, 52 unvaccinated. Twenty-one patients are in an intensive care unit, 10 unvaccinated, and 13 are on a ventilator, seven unvaccinated.
Four pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
