CHARLESTON -- A 33-year-old man from Wood County has died from the COVID-19 coronavirus, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Tuesday.
Twenty-two more deaths from the virus were reported between Monday and Tuesday mornings, raising the death count to 6,339 since the pandemic started more than two years ago.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department did not have information on what, if any, health conditions may have contributed to the 33-year-old's death, said Malcolm Lanham, community health director.
In addition to the 33-year-old man, eight of the 22 deaths were residents younger than 65, including a 43-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 48-year-old woman from Fayette County and a 48-year-old woman from Putnam County,
Other deaths from the region included a 75-year-old man from Roane County.
Across the state, deaths were reported in Marion, Raleigh, Ohio, Harrison, Kanawha, Fayette, Hancock, Berkeley, Randolph, Putnam, Upshur and Mingo counties.
"There are holes left in our hearts and communities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "I urge you to get vaccinated and boosted to protect those around you."
Active cases were 2,575 on Tuesday, a drop of 530 from 3,045 on Tuesday. The state also reported 433 new cases of the virus were received in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday mornings.
Hospitalizations were at 525 patients on Tuesday, 330 of those unvaccinated, with 126 in an intensive care unit, 94 of those unvaccinated, and 72 on a ventilator, 60 of those unvaccinated. Eight pediatric cases were reported with one child in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
