CHARLESTON -- A Wirt County man was among the five deaths from COVID-19 complications reported on Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state also reported 623 active COVID-19 cases statewide, the lowest since around July 2020, and hospitalizations below 200, the first time they were that low since August.
The death count since the pandemic started more than two years ago was at 6,651 residents of West Virginia.
Among the deaths confirmed on Monday was an 86-year-old man from Wirt County, a 62-year-old man from Cabell County, a 56-year-old man from Brooke County, an 84-year-old woman from Raleigh County and a 73-year-old woman from Wyoming County.
Department Secretary Bill J. Crouch encouraged residents to get vaccinated and booster shots to reduce the spread of the virus.
Active cases were 132 less than on Friday, the state said. New positive cases received since the last report was 339, according to Monday's pandemic update.
Current active cases in local counties as of Monday (previous report): Calhoun 3 (1), Doddridge 3 (3), Jackson 5 (11), Pleasants 1 (2), Ritchie 6 (7), Roane 4 (7), Tyler 1 (3), Wetzel 9 (13), Wirt 0 (0), Wood 26 (28).
Two counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map. Webster joined Braxton as yellow, second lowest in the system. All other counties are green, lowest level based on infection rates.
Three staff cases and 72 inmate cases were reported Monday in corrections facilities.
Hospitalizations were reported at 198 on Monday, of which 122 are unvaccinated. Sixty-four patients are in an intensive care unit, of which 43 are unvaccinated, and 34 patients are on a ventilator, 22 of whom are unvaccinated.
Four pediatric patients were confirmed.
The most hospitalizations during the latest omicron variant surge was around 1,100 in February.
