CHARLESTON -- Ten more residents have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus since the Friday pandemic report, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said Monday.
The death count as of Monday was 6,559 since the pandemic began more than two years ago. A previously reported death in December 2020 of a 47-year-old woman was removed after it was determined not to be COVID-19-related.
The department has confirmed the deaths of a 58-year-old woman from Cabell County, an 81-year-old woman from Monongalia County, a 61-year-old man from Preston County, an 89-year-old man from Lewis County, a 60-year-old man from Cabell County, a 78-year-old man from Cabell County, an 82-year-old woman from Lewis County, an 87-year old woman from Lewis County, a 79-year-old man from Taylor County and a 90-year-old man from Monongalia County.
"With a heavy heart, we share this solemn news of more lives lost to this pandemic and extend our sympathies to the families affected," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
Active cases were at 1,244 on Monday with 664 new cases received since the last update on Friday. Active cases dropped almost 200 since Friday.
No change was reported in the County Alert System Map. The only yellow county is Ritchie and the only gold county is Webster.
All other counties are green, the lowest level in infection rates. Yellow is second lowest.
The state reported 272 COVID-related patients in the hospital, 170 of those unvaccinated. Of the 74 patients in an intensive care unit, 49 are unvaccinated, and of the 44 patients on a ventilator, 30 are unvaccinated.
Seven pediatric patients are in the hospital.
