West Virginia reports continuing decline in COVID-19 cases

CHARLESTON — Active cases are now below 900 in West Virginia and less than 80 in the region, according to the latest COVID-19 update Wednesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

Also, all counties are green on the County Alert System Map, the lowest level of alert based on infection rates.

The state reported 872 active cases statewide. In contrast the most active cases recorded during the latest surge of the pandemic was 21,717 in January.

Health officials also reported 232 new cases of the virus have been received in the period between the Tuesday and Wednesday updates.

Current active cases in local counties are: Calhoun 4, Doddridge 3, Gilmer 3, Jackson 8, Pleasants 4, Ritchie 5, Roane 7, Tyler 2, Wetzel 15, Wirt 0, Wood 26.

Deaths and hospitalizations continue, as predicted by state health officials.

Another 24 people have died from Tuesday to Wednesday, raising the death toll attributed to the virus to 6,622.

Deaths were confirmed of residents from Fayette, Mercer, Putnam, Wyoming, Berkeley, Logan, McDowell, Raleigh, Hampshire, Cabell, Lewis, Mason, Marshall and Harrison counties. The youngest was a 39-year-old man from Berkeley County.

“The loss of additional lives is painful to report,” department Secretary Bill J. Crouch, who encouraged vaccinations and boosters, said.

The state reported 255 people are in the hospital with COVID complications. Of those hospital, the majority, 169 patients, are unvaccinated.

Forty-four of the 72 patients in an intensive care unit are unvaccinated. Twenty-eight of the 43 patients on a ventilator are unvaccinated.

One pediatric patient was reported.
