CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia hovered just above 400 on Monday, according to the latest statistics from the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
All 55 counties in the state remained green on the County Alert System map, representing the lowest level of spread.
Active cases totaled 406 Monday, dropping from 460 as numbers have generally continued to decline in recent weeks. State officials warn there could be an increase as the presence of the omicron BA.2 variant in the United States.
Active cases in local counties Monday (Friday) were: Calhoun, 0 (0), Doddridge, 2 (1), Gilmer, 0 (0), Jackson, 1 (6), Pleasants, 1 (1), Ritchie, 2 (3), Roane, 8 (4), Tyler, 0 (0), Wetzel, 6 (1), Wirt, 0 (0), Wood, 11 (14).
DHHR confirmed four deaths attributed to the virus Monday: two men, ages 76 and 74, from Greenbrier County; a 50-year-old Wayne County man and a 55-year-old Brooke County man.
"Every life lost to this deadly virus leaves a hole in a family, a community and our state," said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR cabinet secretary. "I offer my deepest sympathies to all who are mourning a loved one today."
Hospitalizations were also trending downward, with 155 statewide, 60 percent of whom are unvaccinated. There were 58 people in intensive care units, 58 percent unvaccinated. Twenty-three patients were on ventilators, 52.2 percent unvaccinated.
