CHARLESTON -- Another three Wood County residents have died from complications from the COVID-19 coronavirus, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Wednesday.
The department reported the deaths a 37-year-old man, a 51-year-old man and an 85-year-old woman from Wood County. Also reported were the deaths of an 84-year-old man from Gilmer County and a 76-year-old woman from Pleasants County.
Twenty-nine more fatalities were reported on Wednesday, raising the death count since the pandemic started more than two years ago to 6,863. Twenty-three of the residents reported on Wednesday were from the data reconciliation with the death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health.
Deaths also were reported in Fayette, Kanawha, County, Upshur, Wyoming, Lincoln, Barbour, Greenbrier, Jefferson, Monroe, Mingo, Taylor, Raleigh, Boone, Logan, Hancock, Pendleton and Monongalia counties. The deaths in the reconciliation occurred from January to March and one occured in December.
Active cases were at 354 on Wednesday with 128 new cases received since the Tuesday report, the department said. Cases were at 376 on Tuesday, the lowest since the early days of the pandemic in 2020.
Local active cases are: Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 2 (2), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 2 (0), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 2 (2), Roane 7 (8), Tyler 0 (0), Wetzel 7 (6), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 12 (13).
All counties are green, the lowest level, on the County Alert System Map.
Ninety-seven of the 160 patients statewide in the hospital are unvaccinated. Fifty-four, 32 unvaccinated, are in an intensive care unit and 19 patients, 10 unvaccinated, are on a ventilator.
One pediatric case was reported.
Five staff and 17 inmates were reported as active cases by the Division of Corrections at Parkersburg Community Corrections, the St. Marys Correctional Center and the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.
