CHARLESTON -- Wood County was upgraded to yellow on West Virginia's County Alert System map, where only one county was red as of Monday.
Total deaths were at 6,023 on Monday with another 31 deaths confirmed since Friday, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
The confirmations include eight people from the Mid-Ohio Valley -- a 64-year-old woman from Wood County, a 69-year-old man from Wood County, a 64-year-old man from Jackson County, an 87-year-old man from Jackson County, an 85-year-old woman from Doddridge County, a 91-year-old man from Wood County and an 86-year-old man from Wood County.
The death count in Wood County was 313 as of Monday, 122 in Jackson County and 17 in Doddridge County.
Other deaths were confirmed in Harrison, Braxton, Marion, Putnam, Cabell, Hancock, Taylor, Greenbrier, Fayette, Kanawha, Mingo and Lincoln counties.
"Help prevent or severely lessen the effects of this virus by choosing to have all family members ages 5 and older receive the COVID vaccine," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "I urge all parents and guardians to talk to your child's doctor for more information."
Statewide active cases have dropped to 7,262. Cases have been trending downward over past weeks, reaching a peak of 21,717 in the latest omicron variant surge on Jan. 22.
Active cases in Wood County on Monday were at 260, a drop of more than 40 from the 303 in Friday's report.
Active cases in other counties in the region (previous report) are: Wirt 15 (25); Wetzel 54 (58); Tyler 27 (34); Roane 55 (52); Ritchie 36 (35); Pleasants 16 (16); Jackson 49 (68); Gilmer 28 (25); Doddridge 24 (26); Calhoun 38 (43).
After weeks at the highest red and orange levels on the County Alert System map, Wood County has been upgraded to yellow, second lowest level next to green. The map is based on infection rates.
Also yellow are Jackson, Wirt and Gilmer Counties. Pleasants is the only green county in the region.
Wetzel, Tyler, Ritchie, Doddridge, Roane and Calhoun are mid-level gold.
State health officials have said while the active cases appear to have reached a peak and are on the decline, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths will continue for several more weeks.
Hospitalizations also have been trending downward and were at 779 on Monday. Of those hospitalized, 518, or 66.5 percent, are unvaccinated.
The department reported 180 patients are in an intensive care unit, 134, or 74.4 percent, unvaccinated, and 113 patients who are on a ventilator, 91, or 80.5 percent unvaccinated.
Fifteen pediatric patients were reported with two in an ICU and two on a ventilator.
