CHARLESTON -- Forty-two more deaths were reported Thursday from the COVID-19 coronavirus in West Virginia, the Department of Housing and Human Resources said.
Deaths were at 6,146 residents since the pandemic began. Thursday's death report also included fatalities found in a data reconciliation with the death certificates by the Bureau of Public Health.
The youngest was a 36-year-old woman in Mercer County.
Among the deaths reported on Thursday were an 84-year-old woman from Jackson County, a 63-year-old woman from Jackson County and an 81-year-old woman from Wood County.
The state also confirmed the deaths of residents in Kanawha, Clay, Raleigh, McDowell, Mercer, Raleigh, Lewis, Cabell, Harrison, Hancock, Barbour, Berkeley, Grant, Taylor, Randolph, Mingo, Brooke, Greenbrier, Boone, Taylor, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Ohio, Monongalia, Wayne, Putnam and Mineral counties. The reconciled deaths occurred in January and February.
"It is with great sadness that we are still seeing hospitalizations due to COVID-19," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Please help stop this tragic disease by scheduling a COVID vaccine or booster shot today."
The coronavirus dashboard at coronavirus.wv.gov was not updated until Thursday afternoon because of a service outage with a vendor affecting the receipt of COVID-19 lab results, the state said.
Active cases on Thursday were 4,857, down from 5,271 on Wednesday. The state received 1,478 new cases of the virus from Wednesday to Thursday.
Active cases in Wood County were at 180 on Thursday, slightly down from 185 on Wednesday.
Active cases in other counties on Thursday were (previous day): Wirt 11 (13); Wetzel 39 (43); Tyler 13 (14); Roane 34 (3); Ritchie 25 (24); Pleasants 16 (13); Jackson 41 (42); Gilmer 24 (20); Doddridge 27 (27); Calhoun 13 (17).
Hospitalizations from Wednesday dropped by 39 to 753 on Thursday. Of those, 484 people, or 64.3 percent, are unvaccinated. Intensive care unit admissions were at 193, 77.2 percent, unvaccinated. Patients on ventilators were at 112, 79.5 percent, are unvaccinated.
Fourteen pediatric patients were reported on Thursday with four patients in ICU and three on ventilators.
