CHARLESTON -- Three residents of Wood County were among the 16 additional deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus reported on Friday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Confirmed dead are an 89-year-old man, an 83-year-old man and a 90-year-old man from Wood County and a 57-year-old man from Ritchie County, the department said.
The death count since the pandemic started was at 6,162 people in West Virginia.
In Wood County, 319 people have died from the virus.
Other deaths were confirmed in Kanawha, Randolph, Fayette, Mingo, Lincoln, Raleigh, Mason, Marion and Clay counties.
Most of the deaths occurring after vaccinations became available in December 2020 have been the unvaccinated, according to the state.
"There are many heroes in our fight against COVID-19 and that list includes every West Virginian who has chosen to be vaccinated and boosted," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Thank you for helping save the lives of your families, friends and community."
The state reported 4,768 active cases on Friday, a drop from the 4,857 on Thursday. The state also reported 1,126 new cases received from Thursday to Friday mornings.
Active cases were 177 in Wood County on Friday, a drop of three since Thursday. Active cases in other counties on Friday were (previous day): Wirt 9 (11); Wetzel 39 (39); Tyler 12 (13); Roane 42 (34); Ritchie 28 (25); Pleasants 15 (16); Jackson 38 (41); Gilmer 23 (24); Doddridge 27 (27); Calhoun 10 (13).
No counties are red, the highest level of spread, on the County Alert System map.
Tyler, Pleasants, Wirt and Calhoun are green, the lowest level. Wood, Jackson, Wetzel, Roane and Gilmer are yellow, second lowest. Ritchie and Doddridge are gold, mid-level.
Hospital admissions of COVID-19 patients totaled 740 on Friday, of which 477, 64.5 percent, are unvaccinated. The state reported 180 patients in an intensive care unit, 142, or 78.9 percent unvaccinated, and107 patients who are on ventilators, 87, or 81.3 percent unvaccinated.
Thirteen pediatric patients were reported with four in an ICU and three on ventilators.
