PARKERSBURG -- A man accused of beating and shooting one man and assaulting another on Feb. 13 was arrested Thursday after a vehicle pursuit that started near Parkersburg and continued to Little Hocking.
Isreal Crumpton, 27, of Detroit, was being held without bond at the Washington County Jail on a fugitive from justice warrant and had already signed a waiver of extradition Thursday afternoon, according to Marietta Municipal Court personnel.
He is facing charges of attempted murder and malicious assault when he returns to West Virginia, Parkersburg Police Chief Scott Elliott said.
Crumpton was identified as a suspect in two attacks that happened Feb. 13 in south Parkersburg, and Parkersburg Police determined he was returning to the area Wednesday night, Elliott said. Officers set up surveillance in conjunction with the Wood County Sheriff's Department and West Virginia State Police.
The suspect was spotted in a Dodge Challenger on U.S. 50 near the Division Street exit around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Elliott said. He did not comply when a cruiser attempted to pull him over, so state troopers deployed stop sticks to deflate the vehicle's tires.
"He ran over the stop sticks but continued to flee until the tires deflated," Elliott said. "He made it to Little Hocking, where the car wouldn't go anymore."
The vehicle stopped near Arrowhead Road and Crumpton refused to exit, Elliott said. Washington County Sheriff's deputies and Parkersburg Police removed him from the car. Crumpton suffered a laceration to his head and was taken to the Memorial Health System's Belpre Emergency Department for evaluation, Elliott said.
Crumpton's charges stem from a pair of attacks at two different residences in south Parkersburg on Feb. 13.
Another Detroit man, 24-year-old Devin Mitchell, was asked to come to 1502 Crescent St. to meet someone, Elliott said. When Mitchell arrived inside the apartment, Crumpton began striking him in the head and face with his hands, feet and a handgun, he said.
"Mr. Crumpton then shot the victim at least one time and then continued striking him," Elliott said. "During the incident, Mr. Crumpton was demanding that the victim give him his money."
Police were alerted to the incident after someone at the residence took Mitchell to WVU Medicine Camden Clark.
The second attack happened soon after the first at 1508 Crescent St., where Crumpton allegedly entered the residence uninvited and attacked 22-year-old Dallas Mitchell, Devin Mitchell's brother, also from Detroit, Elliott said. The suspect "struck the victim in the face several times, causing significant lacerations and a broken nose," he said.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have identified other persons of interest, Elliott said.
