CHARLESTON -- Statewide hospitalizations of COVID patients dropped below 1,000 Monday.
The Department of Health and Human Resources reported 986 cases, of which 66.4 percent, 655 people are unvaccinated.
Intensive care unit admissions were at 215, 173 unvaccinated, and 120 patients were on a ventilator, 98 unvaccinated.
The most people in the hospital in the latest surge was 1,100 on Feb. 1, which bested the previous record of 1,012 on Sept. 24.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark reported 72 COVID patients, 25 of whom are fully vaccinated. Ten patients are in the ICU, three of those fully vaccinated.
Seven patients are on a ventilator, two fully vaccinated.
Two local residents are among the COVID-19 dead confirmed Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state reported another 31 deaths from the virus since the last pandemic update, raising the death toll since record keeping began about two years ago.
Confirmed on Monday was a 98-year-old man from Wood County and a 70-year-old woman from Roane County.
The total number of deaths in Wood County was at 301 on Monday and 32 in Roane County.
Deaths were reported Monday in Kanawha, Raleigh, Greenbrier, Grant, Jefferson, McDowell, Wayne, Berkeley, Harrison, Morgan, Jefferson, Preston, Mingo, Mineral, Webster and Nicholas.
Active cases continue to decline. The state reported 10,700 active cases on Monday, from 11,116 on Friday. The most active cases in the latest surge was 21,717 on Jan. 22, which was based on the new five-day active status guideline from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state also reported 1,273 new cases received from the last update on Friday.
"If you look at these charts, you'll see that, as we entered this surge from the omicron variant, our numbers went way, way up. But now, you see them moving down pretty aggressively," Gov. Jim Justice said at his Monday morning pandemic briefing. "We're starting to move in a good direction and we're very, very hopeful that this drop off will continue."
Active cases in Wood County on Monday were 359, down from 401 from Friday's report.
Numbers from other local counties (previous report) are: Calhoun 45 (81); Doddridge 38 (53); Gilmer 52 (54); Jackson 55 (87); Pleasants 19 (26); Ritchie 60 (66); Roane 64 (71); Tyler 43 (45); Wetzel 90 (90); Wirt 19 (26).
Outbreaks in long-term care facilities are 676 staff and 749 residents. Cases in corrections centers include 234 staff and 915 inmates.
Calhoun County is the only green county in the immediate area on the County Alert System map. Based on infection rates, green is the lowest level.
Gilmer County is the only red county in the region, the highest alert level. Seventeen counties are red.
Jackson and Pleasants counties are yellow, second from the lowest. Wood, Wirt and Roane counties are gold, mid level.
Wetzel, Tyler and Ritchie counties are orange, second highest.
