Suspect in pursuit, standoff held in Washington County
Additional charges expected in Wood County
PARKERSBURG — A man arrested in Washington County Friday after fleeing from Wood County home confinement officers is facing charges on both sides of the Ohio River.
Martin Riley Robinson, 47, of 107 Pickering St., Lot A, Parkersburg, is in custody at the Washington County Jail on charges of inducing panic, failure to comply, obstructing, possession of criminal tools, criminal damaging and harassment by inmate, Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said Sunday. Robinson is being held without bond pending an appearance this morning in Marietta Municipal Court.
The pursuit began around 3:25 p.m. Friday when home confinement officers went to Robinson’s residence to serve a revocation order, according to a press release from Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard. Robinson was on home confinement related to sex offenses pending in Wood County Circuit Court, it said.
Robinson allegedly fled on foot, then in his SUV, striking Wood County Confinement Operations Director Gary Michael Deem in the process, the release said. Deem was treated and released from a local hospital, Woodyard said.
Wood County Sheriff’s deputies and Parkersburg Police pursued Robinson, who headed north on Interstate 77 and lost control after the Ohio State Highway Patrol deployed stop sticks to disable his vehicle, the release said. It ended up to the right of the fog line near mile marker 6 outside of Marietta, and Robinson refused to exit.
Traffic was snarled on I-77 and nearby Ohio 821 as the situation unfolded. After negotiations failed to get him out of the vehicle, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. team used non-lethal means to remove him, the release said.
Parkersburg Police anticipate charging Robinson out of the initial incident, potentially with attempted malicious assault of a government official and fleeing with reckless disregard, Chief Scott Elliott said.
During the pursuit, a Parkersburg Police cruiser suffered a mechanical problem, causing it to catch fire, Elliott said. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames and was disabled, he said.
