CHARLESTON -- An event to commemorate the year after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and insurrection by right-wing militants to stop certification of the Electoral College results for president will be held 5 p.m. today at the Capitol in Charleston.
The Remembrance Vigil was organized by the West Virginia Freedom to Vote Coalition, a group of organizations and concerned West Virginians representing veterans, young people, small business owners, faith leaders and current and former elected officials.
It will be held at the riverside steps of the Capitol and virtually at https://tinyurl.com/ekwhxmkz.
The Charleston vigil is among 175 events that will take place across the country including at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
Speakers in Charleston will include the Rev. David Fryson, founding vice president of the West Virginia University Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and pastor at First Baptist Church of Kanawha City.
Also speaking will be: former Secretary of State Natalie Tennant; Charleton Councilwoman Becky Cain Ceperley, League of Women Voters National president from 1992 to 1998; Wes Holden, Army veteran and former deputy state director for U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller; Ivin Lee, former chief of the Dunbar Police Department and retired officer with the Charleston Police; Howard Swint, commercial real estate broker in Charleston and concerned citizen; Lakiesha Lloyd, Army veteran; Zach Shrewsbury, Marine Corps veteran; and others to be announced.
