BELPRE -- Belpre voters will be asked to renew an additional tax levy first passed five years ago for fire and emergency medical services in the city of Belpre.
Belpre City Council voted Monday to approve three readings of a 1.75 mill additional tax levy renewal to be placed on the May primary ballot in Belpre.
The levy raises $200,000 per year for fire and emergency medical services. The deadline for submitting the resolution to the county auditor's office is Feb. 2.
In other business, council approved the second reading of legislation for the authorization of Belpre to partner with the Community Housing Impact and Preservation Program. The program provides low-interest loans to rehabilitate delinquent properties, Lorentz said.
In his report Monday, Mayor Mike Lorentz said he, Safety Service Director Connie Hoblitzell and Police Chief Terry Williams met with officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the county dog warden.
"Over the past few years, we have had many issues with service when we get animal complaints. With the cooperation of the Sheriff's Department and our officers we now have a clearer picture of responsibilities. People should know that response will definitely improve," he said.
Lorentz said there have been some question as to the way the city decides when to close the Belpre Senior Center. Currently, the city uses the school weather decisions, meaning if schools are closed the senior center closes as well. He asked if anyone had other ideas in that regard.
The Rules Committee will hold a committee meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 7.
