CHARLESTON -- Three Jackson County residents are among the most recent West Virginians whose deaths have been attributed to COVID-19.
The state Department of Health and Human Resources announced another 27 deaths due to the coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 5,191 since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. They include a 69-year-old man and two women, ages 73 and 64, from Jackson County, as well as a 75-year-old Wetzel County residents.
The youngest individual whose death was reported Monday was a 32-year-old man from Braxton County, while the oldest was an 86-year-old woman from Marshall County.
"We send our sincere condolences to these families for their profound loss," DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "The COVID-19 vaccine is lifesaving and available to all West Virginians ages 5 and older. Please make the decision to be vaccinated."

Active cases statewide dipped below 9,000 Monday, to 8,934, after hitting 9,092 on Friday.
Active case totals in Mid-Ohio Valley counties as of Monday (Friday) were: Calhoun, 43 (48); Doddridge, 41 (38); Gilmer, 37 (29); Jackson, 77 (73); Pleasants, 18 (19); Ritchie, 39 (39); Roane, 77 (85); Tyler, 13 (14); Wetzel, 34 (39); Wirt, 11 (17); and Wood, 293 (340).
Jackson remained the only county in the region classified as red on the state's County Alert System map, representing the highest level of spread based on the lower of new cases per 100,000 people in a one- or two-week period or percentage of tests coming back positive.
Wood, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Ritchie and Roane counties were orange, the second highest, while Wetzel and Wirt were yellow, the second lowest. Pleasants and Tyler counties were two of the only four counties in the state at green, the lowest level.
