PARKERSBURG -- A Parkersburg man was arraigned on wanton endangerment and animal cruelty charges Tuesday after he shot a dog trying to protect its owner.
Zohn Joseph Kelly, 31, 915 15th St., Parkersburg, got into a confrontation with the victim, at which time the dog intervened, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Wood County Magistrate Court.
"The dog was protecting the victim, who was also in the line of fire when (Kelly) pulled a handgun out, shooting the dog in the right side of the back midway down," the complaint said.
When the officer arrived at the scene, the dog was alive and its bullet wounds were being treated, according to the complaint.
It is unknown whether the dog survived.
Kelly is being held at North Central Regional Jail on a $55,000 surety bond.
