CHARLESTON -- There were 31 additional COVID-19 deaths reported by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources as of Wednesday morning.
The state has seen a total of 5,242 deaths caused by COVID and a 60-year-old male from Wood County was included in Wednesday's count through the Bureau for Public Health's data reconciliation. The death occurred in October.
Other deaths reported Wednesday include a 40-year old male from Doddridge County and a 79-year old male from Jackson County. Statewide, the youngest was a 28-year old male from Harrison County and the oldest was a 92-year old male from Kanawha County.
There are 8,727 active cases statewide.
"During the holiday season, we feel the loss of loved ones with a deeper pain," said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. "Each person lost to this virus is loved and remembered. Please obtain your vaccine or booster today to honor their memory."
Jackson County is in the red on the county alert map with 87 cases. The following counties are in the orange: Wood (234), Calhoun (44), Roane (64), Gilmer (43) and Doddridge (30). Wirt County is yellow with 15 cases. Pleasants County is green with 15 active cases and Ritchie is gold with 38 cases.
West Virginians ages 5 years and older are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. Boosters are also available. To learn more about the vaccine, or to find a vaccine site near you, visit vaccinate.wv.gov or call 1-833-734-0965.
Free testing is available at Vienna Baptist Church at 3401 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Dec. 27 and 28.
People over the age of 50 who are vaccinated and boosted after Dec. 7 can sign up for the "Do It For Babydog: Senior Center Edition" to win a $50 gift card.
