CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases again rose over a 24-hour period in West Virginia, where a Wood County woman was among the 10 additional fatalities attributed to the virus, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Friday.
The state reported 7,275 active cases, an increase of 341 cases from Thursday to Friday morning. Cases have generally increased this week from 6,436 on Monday. Active cases peaked in the latest surge on Sept. 16 at 29,744.
The state also reported 1,363 new cases in the 24 hours from Thursday to Friday mornings, which also exceeds the 1,114 new cases received from Wednesday to Thursday morning.
In Wood County, active cases jumped up by 32 from Thursday to Friday, to 265. Active cases in Wood County were at the highest on Sept. 16 at 1,510.
Active cases in local counties as of Friday are (previous day): Calhoun 52 (48); Doddridge, 13 (14); Gilmer, 21 (19); Jackson, 85 (85); Pleasants, 18 (18); Ritchie, 21 (24); Roane, 69 (67); Tyler, 24 (18); Wetzel, 83 (77); Wirt, 25 (24).
The state reported 10 more deaths from COVID-19, including a 53-year-old woman from Wood County. Other deaths were reported in Mineral, Harrison, Fayette, Marion, Cabell, Ohio, McDowell and Greenbrier counties.
The death toll since the pandemic began in spring 2020 is 4,726.
"Too many West Virginia families have lost a loved one due to COVID-19," Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Help prevent further loss of life by scheduling your vaccine or booster shot today."
Wood, Wetzel, Calhoun and Jackson counties are red, the highest level of viral spread on the County Alert System based on infection rates and percentage of positive cases. Tyler and Roane are orange, second highest.
Ritchie is yellow, second lowest, Pleasants and Doddridge are green, lowest, and Wirt and Gilmer are gold, mid-level.
Of the 511 people in a West Virginia hospital with COVID-related complications, 382 are unvaccinated, the state said. Of the 173 in an intensive care unit, 147 are unvaccinated and 86 of the 97 patients on ventilators are unvaccinated.
