PARKERSBURG -- Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia dropped from Monday to Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department in its Tuesday morning pandemic update reported 6,733 active cases statewide, a drop of 263 from Monday's 6,996. The highest number of active cases was 29,774 in September, fueled by the unvaccinated and the more infectious delta variant of the virus, according to state health officials.
The state also reported 502 new cases received in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday mornings.
Active cases in Wood County were 276 on Tuesday, up from 262 on Monday. Active cases peaked in Wood County at more than 1,510 on Sept. 17.
Active cases in other local counties Tuesday (previous day) were: Calhoun, 40 (42); Doddridge, 18 (15); Gilmer, 12 (17); Jackson, 64 (82); Pleasants, 16 (14); Ritchie, 27 (24); Roane, 45 (49); Tyler, 35 (33); Wetzel, 69 (76); Wirt, 24 (23).
One death was reported on Tuesday, a 47-year-old man from Logan County.
Also reported on Tuesday were another 12 deaths as a result of the data reconciliation with death certificates by the state Bureau of Public Health.
The deaths were in Calhoun, Wetzel, Wayne, Logan, Tucker, Fayette, Brook, Harrison, Upshur, Nicholas, Marion and Marshall counties. The deaths occurred from October to November with one death occurring in August 2020.
The death count in West Virginia was 4,770 as of Tuesday.
Wood County remains in the red zone in the County Alert System map, the highest level of alert for spread of the virus based on infection rate and percentage of positive tests. Wood County is the only red county in the region.
Pleasants and Gilmer are green, the lowest level. Doddridge and Roane are yellow, second lowest, while Wirt is in the middle at gold. Wetzel, Tyler, Ritchie, Jackson and Calhoun are orange, second highest.
Of the 528 people hospitalized in West Virginia with COVID complications, 395 are unvaccinated. The state reported 179 patients are in an intensive care unit, of which 150 are unvaccinated, and 101 people are on ventilators, 87 unvaccinated.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark reported 26 COVID patients, of which 16 are unvaccinated. One of five patients in ICU has been vaccinated, and one of four patients on a ventilator has been vaccinated.
