CHARLESTON -- The unvaccinated make up more than three-quarters of the COVID-19 patient census in West Virginia hospitals, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources in its Tuesday morning pandemic update.
The department reported 77.2 percent of the 578 COVID-19 patients in hospitals are unvaccinated. Of the 193 people in an intensive care unit, 82.4 percent are unvaccinated and of the 111 people on a ventilator, 82.9 percent are unvaccinated.
At WVU Medicine Camden Clark, 37 of the 43 total COVID patients are not vaccinated. None of the 10 patients in ICU have been vaccinated and one of nine patients on a ventilator has been vaccinated.
State officials are encouraging residents to get a vaccination to prevent or lessen serious complications from an infection and stop or slow the spread of the virus.
Of the 207,711 positive cases since vaccinations started in December, 8.34 percent are breakthrough cases, people who have been infected despite being vaccinated. The state cited 3,358 deaths since vaccinations started, of which 8.25 percent are breakthrough cases.
The department on Tuesday reported 25 more deaths since the last pandemic update, which includes 15 deaths from a routine data reconciliation with the death certificates.
The state reported the deaths of a 72-year-old man from Boone County, a 77-year-old woman from Berkeley County, an 86-year-old woman from Wayne County, a 70-year-old man from Logan County, a 64-year-old woman from Lewis County, a 79-year-old man from Jefferson County, a 64-year-old man from Harrison County, a 79-year-old woman from Logan County, a 62-year-old man from Mason County, and a 75-year-old woman from Harrison County.
The reconciled deaths include an 84-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 45-year-old woman from Greenbrier County, a 90-year-old woman from Marion County, an 86-year-old woman from Gilmer County, a 77-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 28-year-old woman from Wyoming County, a 44-year-old man from Wyoming County, a 60-year-old woman from Wyoming County, a 64-year-old man from Wyoming County, a 78-year-old man from Fayette County, a 47-year-old man from Barbour County, a 54-year-old man from Morgan County, a 40-year-old woman from Marshall County, a 91-year-old woman from Fayette County and a 40-year-old woman from Brooke County. These deaths range from August 2021 through October 2021.
"This is another tragic day for West Virginia as the death toll continues to rise. Our hearts go out to these West Virginians and their families," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Let's continue taking every precaution we can to slow the spread of this disease, including vaccination."
Active cases were at 6,597 statewide as of Tuesday morning, a drop from 6,940 on Monday. The state reported 629 new cases of the virus in the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday mornings.
Active cases in Wood County were 255 on Tuesday, a decline of 31 from Monday morning. Active cases peaked at more than 1,500 in September in Wood County.
Active cases in other local counties on Tuesday (previous day) are: Calhoun, 36 (43); Doddridge, 21 (50); Gilmer, 36 (38); Jackson 74 (84); Pleasants, 16 (15); Ritchie, 17 (17); Roane, 86 (88); Tyler, 12 (11); Wirt, 15 (16).
