CHARLESTON -- Twenty additional COVID-related deaths were reported by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, including an 80-year old woman from Roane County, in its Tuesday morning update.
Of those 20 deaths, three were reported within the past 24 hours and the remaining 17 are a result of a data reconciliation with official death certificates. The 17 deaths took place during the months of September and October.
"We are deeply saddened by this news, a loss to both the families and our state," Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary said. "We extend our deepest sympathies and commitment to continue working to end this deadly virus through vaccination."
The department reported as of Tuesday 5,937 active cases around the state. According to the county alert system, Wood, Jackson and Roane Counties are in the orange, Calhoun and Ritchie Counties are in the yellow and Wirt and Pleasants are in the green.
The following are the number of active cases in local counties: Wood, 198; Jackson, 70; Roane, 98; Calhoun, 26; Ritchie, 16; Wirt, 8 and Pleasants, 12.
The state reported 544 people are in a hospital with COVID-related complications, 76.3% unvaccinated, with 190 patients in an intensive care unit, 84.7% unvaccinated, and 94 people on a ventilator, 81 % unvaccinated.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center reported 23 of 31 the hospitalized COVID patients are unvaccinated, all six of the patients in the intensive care unit are not vaccinated and eight of the nine patients on ventilators are unvaccinated.
