CHARLESTON -- Seven residents from the region -- five from Tyler County -- are among 16 confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 virus reported on Thursday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department has confirmed the deaths of a 50-year-old man from Tyler County, a 68-year-old woman from Tyler County, a 54-year-old man from Tyler County, a 53-year-old man from Roane County, an 80-year-old woman from Wetzel County, a 66-year-old woman from Tyler County and a 90-year-old woman from Wetzel County,
Since the start of the pandemic, 23 people from Tyler County, 22 in Roane and 55 in Wetzel have died from the virus.
Also reported were an 85-year-old man from Fayette County, a 79-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 54-year-old man from Fayette County, a 62-year-old man from Greenbrier County, a 79-year-old woman from Raleigh County, an 80-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 69-year-old woman from Ohio County, a 63-year-old woman from Berkeley County and a 72-year-old man from Kanawha County.
Included in the total deaths reported Thursday by the state was another five residents through the Bureau for Public Health's data reconciliation with death certificates: a 58-year-old man from Nicholas County, a 63-year-old woman from Mercer County, a 77-year-old man from Raleigh County, an 81-year-old man from Marion County, and a 62-year-old man from Harrison County. The deaths are from September to October.
The death toll since the pandemic started last year in West Virginia is 4,511.
"With much sadness, we mourn more lives lost to COVID-19," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. "We extend our sympathies to the families of these West Virginians and encourage those eligible to receive their COVID vaccine or booster."
Active cases again were slightly up on Thursday, 6,662 compared to 6,635 on Wednesday. The state reported 888 new cases of the virus reported in the 24-hour period from Wednesday to Thursday.
Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie and Wirt counties are green, the lowest level on the County Alert Sytem Map. Wood, Jackson, Wetzel, Gilmer, Calhoun and Roane are orange, second highest based on rates of infection.
Pleasants is yellow, second lowest.
Ten counties in the state are red, the highest level.
The state reported 543 people are in a hospital with COVID-19 complications, 429 of those unvaccinated. Of the 192 patients in an intensive care unit, 165 are unvaccinated, and of the 103 people on a ventilator, 91 are unvaccinated.
