CHARLESTON -- Another 60 deaths have been attributed to the COVID-19 virus, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said in its Friday pandemic report.
The fatalities include 30 people identified in a routine data reconciliation with death certificates performed by the Bureau of Public Health.
The death toll was at 4,108 as of Friday morning, according to the state.
Newly reported deaths include a 37-year-old man from Jackson County, a 50-year-old man from Jackson County and a 45-year-old woman from Wood County.
The reconciled deaths include an 85-year-old man from Wetzel County, a 70-year-old man from Wetzel County, a 92-year-old man from Gilmer County and a 76-year-old man from Wetzel County. The reconciled deaths occurred from August to October and included one death in February 2021.
"We extend our sympathy to the families impacted by these deaths," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "To West Virginians who are eligible, but not yet vaccinated, please consider getting vaccinated to stop the spread of COVID-19."
Active cases totaled 10,213 as of Friday. The state reported 1,371 new cases in the 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday.
Active cases totaled 457 on Friday in Wood County, a drop of 60 from Thursday's stats. Active cases in other local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun, 37 (25); Doddridge, 64 (88); Gilmer, 32 (49); Jackson, 193 (205); Pleasants, 28 (27); Ritchie, 59 (78); Roane, 80 (95); Tyler, 35 (46); Wetzel, 80 (106); Wirt, 43 (36).
The dashboard still had not updated numbers statewide for jails and prisons Friday. But in response to a question about the number of active cases at the North Central Regional Jail in relation fluctuations in Doddridge County's daily numbers, state officials said there were just nine active cases among inmates Thursday.
Wood and Jackson are the only red counties on the Alert System Map, the worst level in terms of spread of the virus. Wetzel, Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie, Wirt, Calhoun and Roane are orange, the second-highest level. Pleasants is gold, mid-level, and Gilmer is yellow, second-lowest in severity.
Statewide, 20 counties are red, 27 are orange, six are gold and two are green.
The state reported 812 people are hospitalized because of COVID, 77.5 percent of them unvaccinated. Of the 232 patients in an intensive care unit, 84.1 percent are unvaccinated, and of the 170 people on ventilators, 87.1 percent are not vaccinated.
Of the 2,987 deaths since vaccines started in December, 7.64 percent of those who died were vaccinated.
