PARKERSBURG -- Two men were arrested Monday after they were found with drugs and items related to drug sales in a vehicle.
Driving without tail lights on led to a traffic stop and the arrest of William Spradlin, 58, 1311 Highland Ave., Parkersburg, and Gary Laray Hamilton, 34, 2406 Century Drive, Columbus, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Wood County Magistrate Court.
After pulling over the vehicle at the intersection of 16th and Beaver streets in Parkersburg, law enforcement came into contact with Spradlin, the driver, and Hamilton, the passenger, the complaint said.
The two "appeared to be nervous, avoiding eye contact with this officer and stumbling over their words," which made the officer suspicious there was illegal substances in the car, the complaint said.
The K9 unit of the Vienna Police Department responded and the dog indicated on the driver's side door. Officers recovered a large amount of cash, 7.53 grams of fentanyl in Spradlin's pocket, 11 grams of methamphetamine and five pills believed to be oxycodone hydrochloride on Spradlin's person, the complaint said.
A handgun was also found inside the trunk, according to the complaint. Hamilton said he didn't think the gun was still in there after he had been shooting it earlier that day.
Hamilton had a prior conviction of felonious assault in 2006 which made him unable to possess a firearm, the complaint said.
Spradlin is being charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of fentanyl; Hamilton is being charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver and possession of fentanyl and prohibited person with a firearm.
Both men were being held at North Central Regional Jail on $200,000 surety bonds.
