CHARLESTON -- Eleven residents, two from Wood County, Tuesday were confirmed as deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus, raising the death toll since the pandemic began in 2020 to 4,145, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state has confirmed the deaths of two men from Wood County, 64- and 32-years old. Since the pandemic started last year, 232 people in Wood County have died from the virus.
Statewide on Tuesday, confirmed deaths included a 50-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 41-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 74-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 75-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 54-year-old woman from Wayne County, a 74-year-old man from Cabell County, a 46-year-old woman from Hancock County, an 82-year-old woman from Putnam County and a 62-year-old woman from Putnam County.
"It is with great sadness that we announce more lives lost to this pandemic and extend our sympathies to these families," Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "COVID vaccines are still widely available as well as boosters to those eligible."
Statewide, active cases dropped to 8,535 on Tuesday, a decrease of almost 500 from 9,033 on Monday. The state reported 757 new cases in the 24 hours from Monday to Tuesday morning.
Active cases in Wood County totaled 375 on Tuesday, dropping 38 since Monday morning. The peak in Wood County was 1,510 on Sept. 17.
Active cases in other counties in the region on Tuesday were (previous day): Active cases in local counties (Friday) were: Calhoun, 42 (39); Doddridge, 32 (33); Gilmer, 26 (31); Jackson, 153 (171); Pleasants, 29 (28); Ritchie, 50 (56); Roane, 72 (77); Tyler, 24 (29); Wetzel, 67 (66); Wirt, 48 (46).
Wood and Jackson are the only local counties that are red on the County Alert System map based on infection rate and percent of positive cases. Red is the highest level of alert.
Tyler, Doddridge and Roane are gold, mid level on the chart. Wetzel, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt and Calhoun are orange, second highest.
Gilmer is green, the lowest level.
The unvaccinated continue to be the majority of patients in the hospital, according to the state. Of the 721 people in the hospital, 76.7% are unvaccinated.
Of the 207 in an intensive care unit, 85% are unvaccinated. The state reported 125 patients on ventilators, 86.4% unvaccinated.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark reported 62 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, 45 of those unvaccinated. All of the 12 patients in ICU are unvaccinated and one of the 11 patients on ventilators has been vaccinated.
