Sistersville woman charged in fatal DUI crash
Cana Turner
BELMONT — A Sistersville woman was arrested Tuesday after she reportedly drove drunk last week, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old.
Abigail Hause, 18, was pronounced dead on the scene Friday on Henry Camp Road in Belmont.
Cana Turner, 21, 6231 Energy Highway, Sistersville, was not at the site of the crash when deputies arrived. The single vehicle was found over a small embankment and it was determined Turner was the vehicle owner and driving the car when the accident happened, the complaint said.
Turner fled on foot after the accident and “failed to make any attempt to provide aid to the victim or contact emergency services,” the complaint said.
She walked along Henry Camp and Cow Creek Road, meeting several motorists and homes along the way but did not ask for help. She was found trying to hide outside of a mobile home near the Ritchie/Pleasants County line, the complaint said.
During a mirandized interview, Turner admitted to “consuming multiple amounts of alcohol” before getting behind the wheel. She said she was “buzzed” prior to the crash but she did not feel she was drunk, according to the complaint.
Law enforcement saw several videos taken within hours of the crash which showed Turner “participating in reckless driving behavior and appearing to be in an impaired state in relation to alcohol consumption and or use of controlled substances,” the complaint said.
Officer also viewed footage which showed Turner purchasing alcohol in St. Marys within hours of the crash, according to the complaint.
A toxicology report is pending and Turner is being charged with driving under the influence causing death and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. She was being held at North Central Regional Jail on a $84,000 bond.
