LITTLE HOCKING — A home was heavily damaged after a fire early Monday evening in the Little Hocking area.

Little Hocking Fire Chief Michael Chevalier said the the call came in Monday at 5:54 p.m. about a house fire at 871 Tower Rd.

The family was at home at the time and smelled smoke coming from a bedroom, he said, adding they went in and saw flames going up the wall which had also caught a mattress on fire. The family tried to put it out themselves and were unable and someone called 911.

Fire crews were on the scene within 10 minutes.

Crews did exterior and interior attacks on the fire. The wood frame home had a metal roof and the fire ran along the roof line.

Chevalier said the house was not fully involved when crews arrived, but it was mostly involved.

The home was a total loss due to damage inside, Chevalier said.

Little Hocking VFD responded with 10 firefighters, Belpre with 12, Dunham with four and Washington Bottom with two. The Blennerhassett Volunteer Fire Department went to Belpre and manned its station in case anything happened. All the departments responded with various equipment and vehicles. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office also responded to help secure the area and control traffic.

A total of five water trucks from the various departments that responded were trucking water to the scene from three-tenths of a mile away, Chevalier said.

No injuries were reported among the firefighters who responded. Chevalier said a couple of the residents had burns on their hands and arms from trying to put out the fire themselves. At least one resident went to the hospital in a private vehicle to be treated.

The family was given information for services that could help and the chief said he told them to contact him if they needed anything. They haven’t contacted him.

Fire crews remained on the scene until around 10 p.m. Monday.

The Little Hocking Volunteer Fire Department posted a “thank you” to the Belpre, Blennerhassett, Dunham, and the Washington Bottom fire departments for their assistance on the fire.

“We greatly appreciate it,” the post said.

The fire remains under investigation.
