Wood County COVID cases continue upward spike
CHARLESTON — Active virus cases in Wood County rose by 57 from Thursday to Friday, according to latest pandemic report from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Wood County also remains in the red zone of the County Alert System Map, the worst level based on infection rate and percent positivity.
Statewide, the department on Friday reported 1,328 new cases in the 24-hour period from Thursday morning to Friday morning and 13,766 active cases.
Virus numbers are near the levels in the first part of the year during a peak of the pandemic in West Virginia.
The state reported 547 people are in a hospital, the highest since late January, with 178 patients in an intensive care unit and 81 people on ventilators. The state reported 526 people in the hospital on Thursday.
Active cases in Wood County in the 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday morning increased from 533 on Thursday to 590 on Friday. Active cases in other local counties on Friday (previous day): Calhoun, 46 (35); Doddridge, 33 (29); Gilmer, 36 (36); Jackson, 103 (99); Pleasants, 46 (44); Ritchie, 51 (43); Roane, 89 (81); Tyler, 120 (106); Wetzel, 283 (270); and Wirt, 27 (25.)
Wood, Wirt, Jackson, Tyler, Wetzel, Ritchie, Calhoun and Roane counties are red on the County Alert Map. Pleasants, Doddridge and Gilmer are orange, second highest in severity on the map.
Pocahontas is the only green county, the lowest level, and Tucker is the only yellow county, second from lowest.
Thirty-five counties are red and 18 counties are orange.
A Roane County resident was among the COVID-19 deaths reported on Friday.
Five deaths were reported on Friday, the youngest being a 36-year-old woman from Morgan County, the state said.
The state reported the death of a 69-year-old man from Roane County, a 54-year-old man from Berkeley County, an 86-year-old woman from Fayette County and an 83-year-old man from Kanawha County.
The death count was at 3,054 on Friday.
“We mourn with all families suffering the loss of loved ones due to COVID-19,” said Human Resources Secretary Bill J. Crouch. “I urge all state residents who have not yet received their vaccine to schedule an appointment.”
Walk-in vaccinations are available from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays at the Wetzel/Tyler Health Department, 425 Fourth Ave., Paden City; 9 a.m. to noon Fridays at the Minnie Hamilton Rural Health Clinic, 186 Hospital Drive, Grantsville; and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays at the Minnie Hamilton FQHC Clinic, 921 Mineral Road, Glenville. Many pharmacies are also offering COVID vaccinations.
