PARKERSBURG -- A Parkersburg man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a man to the point of needing surgery.
Joseph Anthony Sams Sr., 28, 1329 Spring St., Parkersburg, last known address, was arrested after an incident that took place July 22, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Wood County Magistrate Court.
The victim was outside talking to a friend when witnesses said Sams approached him from behind him and knocked him to the ground, according to the complaint. After he was on the ground, Sams continued to beat the victim in the face, the complaint said.
When the victim tried to stand up, Sams kicked him in the face repeatedly, according to the complaint.
"While the victim lay on the ground, he continued to beg the defendant to stop striking him. The victim suffered multiple broken facial bones which required surgery," the complaint said.
Sams was arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court and is being charged with malicious assault. He also had a capias for charges of driving with a suspended license and no insurance. He was being held at North Central Regional Jail on a $100,000 surety bond.
